MAXIS for Good report
A review of 2023 and activities so far in 2024
MAXIS GBN

A word from Mattieu Rouot, our CEO
The last year has seen Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) become an ever more integral part of our culture at MAXIS. I’m very proud of the work that has been done to keep this important topic at the top of our agenda and am grateful to the entire MAXIS team for their engagement and involvement in helping us work towards our CSR goals.
I can see CSR – through our MAXIS for Good initiatives – working its way into everything that we do, from the way we work with our suppliers and partners around the world, to the way we make a difference in both our own communities, and the communities we visit as a team.
At our all-staff MeetUp in Rotterdam last September, we organised and took part in a number of group volunteering activities alongside NL Cares, from a school sports day and a city clean up, to gardening, cooking for the elderly and fixing up a community centre. These activities were extremely rewarding for the whole team, and I’m delighted that we got a chance to give back to the city that hosted us.
I am very aware that while much has been done, we still have a long way to go. Throughout 2024 and beyond, it’s crucial that we continue to prioritise CSR and ESG for our own business strategy but also when working with our external partners – clients, local insurers and suppliers – helping them to achieve their ESG objectives.
Increasingly we are asked about our commitment to CSR in global RFPs, as well as our policies, activities and sustainability credentials. This is an ever more important strategic area and I welcome the opportunity to become even more able to show what we do and plan to do going forward.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our global team again for their engagement and commitment as we continue to develop our MAXIS for Good initiatives.
Regards,
Mattieu

Our CSR journey so far...
We were pleased to publish our first MAXIS for Good report in June 2023. In that report, we discussed the launch of MAXIS for Good and our commitment to having a well-documented, clear and comprehensive approach to ethical, environmental and social issues as a business.
A year on, we’re really proud of the progress that has been made. MAXIS for Good is now a well-established working group within our business, and it continues to grow – we’ve welcomed several new members to our group across each of our seven pillars (Community, Environment, People, Conduct & Ethics, Clients & Solutions, Suppliers & Partners and MAXIS Network).
We’re seeing a real and ever-growing awareness of CSR across the business and it’s become an integral part of our culture, always being considered at the start of new projects and reviews of policies. We’ve also been pleased to note the number of MAXIS team members organising charity activities and suggesting ways to contribute to our local communities.

2024 and looking ahead...
Throughout this year, and beyond, we will continue to develop our MAXIS for Good initiatives, ensuring that CSR is a key factor in the decisions we make as a business, and as individuals.
We aim to fully align ourselves with the expectations of our clients, local insurers, external partners and, of course, our people as far as we are able. We will develop a roadmap that incorporates the actions required to comprehensively underpin all our day-to-day practices and processes at MAXIS with a culture of CSR.
In the near future we hope to be ready to apply for a globally recognised accreditation.
People
In 2023, we ran a number of campaigns both internally and on our social media channels, celebrating diversity and ensuring that we’re supporting the causes that matter most to our people.
These included campaigns for International Women’s Day, where we supported CARE’s campaign ‘A woman’s right to lead’ with a donation towards women leading their families and communities through crises, Pride Month and Juneteenth. For International Men’s Day and World Mental Health Day we held an internal Spotlight session on men’s mental health, helping our global teams better understand mental health in general and that of our male friends, colleagues and loved ones specifically.
We also ran internal Spotlight sessions on mindfulness and sleep health and launched our partnership with HUMANOO, a health & wellness vendor whose app gamifies and incentivises physical activity and mental wellbeing, motivating employees to really take care of themselves. As part of this launch, we promoted a company-wide MAXIS step challenge, encouraging physical activity and some friendly competition between our global teams.

We know we are an international business, reflecting the staff populations of our clients, and in order to truly recognise that and celebrate our diversity we conducted a mini culture survey prior to our all-staff MeetUp in Rotterdam. This helped facilitate a session about the different cultures that make up MAXIS. The survey found that…

Last but not least, we announced our 2023 award winners. Our staff awards look to award those members of the MAXIS team who have embraced and demonstrated our business values: accountability, collaboration and creativity. As always, we were delighted by the volume of nominations, showing that those key attributes are truly engrained in our business and the attitudes of our people.

So far this year, we have continued to mark the causes that matter most to our people including campaigns for Martin Luther King Jr Day, International Women’s Day, US Black History Month, Pride Month, Time to Talk Day and more. And, as the year progresses, we will celebrate and mark more cultural and social days that promote inclusion and understanding.
Following our mini culture survey in 2023, we launched a more extensive DE&I survey earlier this year and are analysing the results to ensure we’re comprehensively catering to the needs of both our people and our clients. Of those who completed the survey, we found that:

We have also added a ‘culture corner’ section to the agenda for our quarterly Town Halls, giving everyone the chance to share what they love about their individual cultures, as well as a chance for us to learn more about our colleagues from around the world.
Before the end of the year, we plan to launch a DE&I committee which ensures the best possible representation of our people at all levels of the business. We will continue to run internal Spotlight sessions for our staff, focusing on topics around personal development and wellness as well as sharing resources from our provider on topics such as embracing life as a new parent and mental health.

Community
Community is a key pillar of our commitment to CSR. Throughout 2023 the MAXIS team undertook a number of volunteering activities.
During our all-staff MeetUp in Rotterdam last September, 140+ members of staff took part in volunteering activities, organised alongside NL Cares. This gave us a great opportunity to give back to the city that hosted us for three days and was really rewarding for everyone involved. Collectively, we donated over 500 hours to these activities, which included:
- sports activities at an after-school club for under-privileged kids
- cooking for the elderly
- fixing up a local community centre
- gardening in some local community gardens
- a city clean-up.
As well as our collective efforts in Rotterdam, other volunteering efforts and contributions to charity included:
- joining a walk for International Women’s Day
- donating artwork to the community centre in Rotterdam where we volunteered
- helping to pack welfare packages for people fighting breast cancer and donating to a local hygiene bank alongside our Shareholder AXA
- donating clothes to Smartworks
- giving our time and talents in the US to take part in a series of comedy events, raising money for victims of the Lewiston shootings and their families with donations going to the Maine Community Foundation
- dressing up for Christmas Jumper Day in the London office, with donations going to Save the Children
- partnering with Demelza, a charity offering hospice care for children in the UK with serious or life-limiting conditions, with staff in our London and Paris offices donating Christmas gifts to the children that Demelza cares for.
We also made further donations to charity partners CARE –– helping them deliver change for some of the world's poorest communities, and to Fauna & Flora –– to support their efforts in protecting the diversity of life on earth.

As part of our commitment to continuing our positive work in our local communities, the Community pillar of MAXIS for Good has decided to choose three broad themes for volunteering and charity work in 2024: alleviating poverty, environmental action and promoting health equity. These themes inform the planning of all community activities throughout the year, and we have already been very active.
- We’ve set up a bottle top collection point in our Paris office so that our people can contribute to AXA’s campaign with Bouchons d’Amour. Bouchons d’Amour sells the bottle tops with money from these sales helping to pay for wheelchairs and other equipment to help people with disabilities.
- Once again, we were delighted to donate to CARE’s International Women’s day ‘Changemakers’ campaign
- We supported some of the MAXIS team in London when they took part in a football tournament raising money for Chamos, a charity working to improve the health and education of underprivileged children and young people in Venezuela.
- The MAXIS Legal team has recently taken part in the London Legal Walk, raising money for the London Legal Trust who help to fund free legal advice and services for those who couldn’t otherwise afford it.
We also ran a blood/plasma donation campaign in the run up to World Blood Donor Day on 14 June, educating our teams on the benefits of, and need for, donations, and encouraging them to get involved in donating blood or plasma.
Throughout the rest of 2024, we will continue to show our commitment to our local communities, organising charity and volunteering activities in line with our chosen themes.

Environment
The environment is a crucial pillar of MAXIS for Good and we are committed to minimising our environmental footprint in all we do.
In 2023, we ran an Earth Day campaign, encouraging our social media contacts to mark the day with positive action. We also ran an internal campaign, with a member of the MAXIS team sharing the changes they have made to reduce their impact on the climate and giving tips to colleagues wanting to do the same.
We created educational videos around how to effectively recycle our waste in the London office and for our other office hubs around the world ensuring there is no excuse for not doing the right thing!

2023 also saw us changing our business travel provider to TravelPerk. TravelPerk captures and offsets 100% of our carbon emissions resulting from business travel by donating part of our fees to various VERRA-certified projects, such as reforestation in Papua New Guinea and Peru. This initiative helps us to limit the impact of business travel on the environment and keep track of our carbon footprint.
We actively encouraged our people to take the train to our MeetUp in Rotterdam and while there, invited our local network partner, Achmea, to join us. To our delight, they donated 17 trees to one of the forests of Staatsbosbeheer on our behalf to celebrate our long working relationship. As mentioned earlier, we also became a donor to Fauna & Flora International.
In April this year we ran another Earth Day campaign, encouraging staff to make small changes on Earth Day and continue them throughout the rest of the year and beyond.
We are also looking into ways in which we can donate redundant IT and other digital equipment to local communities and hope to make our first donations by the end of the summer.
A key strategic project this year is a comprehensive digital migration project. We are using this opportunity to reduce our digital footprint and are also looking into creating digital business cards for all staff replacing the need for printed versions.

Network
In 2023 we started to use our annual network survey to ask our local insurers about their CSR and DE&I efforts relating to both policies, products and services and encourage them to share news of any innovations and local community activities.

Our goals for 2024 include ensuring that all responses to the annual network survey are mapped into our network capabilities documents, demonstrating the readiness of our network to offer DE&I specific services to clients and reflecting their efforts in terms of local or national community support.
We’re also excited to be awarding our ‘CSR champion award’ as part of our 2024 network awards which will take place at the ‘MAXIS Global Forum’ in September this year. This award seeks to shine a light on some of the positive work being done by our network partners across the CSR spectrum.
We will continue to include CSR and ESG criteria as part of our local insurer selection process and encourage our local insurers to share their initiatives and activities with us and collaborate with them locally where appropriate.
Suppliers & Partners
In September 2023 we launched a directory of independent and local suppliers that MAXIS team members can use for personal purchases, such as cards, cakes, etc. and local markets where they can buy lunch, and more. This directory seeks to encourage our staff to make sustainable choices in the local community and support local businesses.
In 2024, we will be working towards growing this directory so that we can try to support more local businesses in more locations.
We are also working with our procurement management team to ensure that CSR and ESG considerations and criteria are integral to our procurement processes and become a standard supply chain requirement.
Clients & Solutions
In the last year we have undertaken a thorough review of our client facing web pages to ensure they offer greater clarity of language through a variety of accessible media.
We have also answered an increasing number of RFP and contract questions relating to MAXIS for Good and our work in the CSR/ESG arena. Such questions help to challenge and encourage us in our journey to be a more sustainable business.

As mentioned above, we are using the opportunity provided by our comprehensive digital migration project in 2024 to look at the carbon footprint of our website and portals. An in-depth audit will help to flag excess or outdated materials and video content making the sites easier to navigate and more environmentally friendly.
We will also use this opportunity to look into the accessibility of our website and portals and will work to achieve a Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) AA rating.
Conduct & Ethics
The Conduct & Ethics team are instrumental in ensuring that as an organisation we maintain the highest standards of integrity and behaviour when doing business.
However, this year the group is working with MAXIS’ internal teams to see how we can further educate our people regarding the importance of practicing exemplary conduct and ethics in everything that we do by adding modules on DE&I, CSR and sustainability into our mandatory annual training.
And, as well as looking at ourselves, we are going to be focusing on the conduct and ethics of our suppliers and partners.
