How captives can support complex EB programmes

Hear DHL’s story on the latest GCP Short podcast

DHL was the first multinational to start writing employee benefits (EB) in its captive in 1984, and today its EB programme is one of the largest and most complex.

This makes the multinational a fascinating case study for how captive solutions can be used to support vast and diverse organisations.

Matthias Helmbold, Vice President of Global Risk Benefits, Health and Wellbeing, at DHL, joined Aaron Brown, Regional Director – EMEA, at MAXIS, and Captive Intelligence Editor Richard Cutcher on the latest Global Captive Podcast (GCP) Short episode.

Aaron Brown, MAXIS, Matthias Helmbold, DHL, and Richard Cutcher, Captive Intelligence, pose for a photo after recording a GCP Short pocast episode at the MAXIS offices in London. On the podcast, Matthias reveals the extraordinary scale of the EB programme DHL runs to take care of its people: “It’s five very independent businesses that have their own strategies, different headcounts and different types of employees. They also have different geographical structures, with 600,000 people spread across nearly every country in the world.”

So, how does DHL do it?

On the podcast, released 2 February, Matthias, Aaron and Richard explore DHL’s story and its experience working with MAXIS’ network to support its captive programme.

Aaron Brown, Regional Director EMEA, MAXISSpeaking on the podcast, Aaron sheds light on the growing trend of decentralised approaches to managing EB programmes like DHL’s – and whether it remains beneficial to take a centralised approach.

Aaron says: “We’re certainly seeing more multinationals tackling decentralisation on a country-by-country, case-by-case basis – going in and winning the hearts and minds of local HR and local insurance teams in each market. It’s a slightly slower approach – but something we’re seeing more and more.”
