London, 12 June 2018 – MAXIS Global Benefits Network (MAXIS GBN), the international employee benefits joint venture between MetLife and AXA, has launched ‘MAXIS Global Wellness’, a unique centralised wellness proposition that utilises comprehensive health analytics to help multinational organisations mitigate the soaring costs of healthcare. The solution, which will be delivered via corporate employee benefits schemes, allows multinationals to target country-specific cost drivers identified via health data analytics to deliver in-depth, targeted wellness solutions to employees.

Underpinned by over four years’ global health data analytics, across 37 countries, the MAXIS Global Wellness solution provides multinationals with the tools and data required to understand their healthcare cost drivers across multiple jurisdictions. The solution offers a suite of products and services to help organisations reduce their costs, providing efficient wellness programmes that better address current deficiencies in healthcare provision in particular markets, as well as addressing concerns that impact the health of their employees.

The launch of MAXIS Global Wellness comes at a time when global medical inflation is running at 8.4% well in excess of the average general inflation rate of 3.1%(1). In some regions and markets such as Middle East & Africa, Latin America & Caribbean, annual medical trends are even higher at 15.3% and 13.9% respectively. How to better manage this cost pressure, while also delivering competitive employee benefits programmes to employees, has become a fundamental issue for many multinationals and this new solution will help them address these challenges.

Recently(2) commissioned research by MAXIS GBN identified that monitoring employee wellness is major concern for 70% of multinationals. The increase in mental health claims is a particular issue, identified by 63% of multinationals, yet it is still seen as a taboo in many markets.

Dr Leena Johns MD, Head of Health and Wellness at MAXIS GBN, said: “MAXIS Global Wellness is a unique proposition, marking the first time a network has challenged the current disparate state of the wellness landscape.  It homogenises the delivery and availability of wellness solutions, delivering cross border and locally viable solutions, with a centralised management process. While enabling organisations to standardise wellness provision worldwide, it is complementary to wellness programmes currently available in local markets.

Heads of Employee Benefits want to know where they are spending money, including identifying cost drivers and how best to address them in specific countries. They also want to benchmark their expenditure against previous year’s investment and against the country baseline so that they can identify areas for improvement and a change in approach.  MAXIS GBN analyses huge volumes of health claims data from local insurers across the globe to discover what is driving healthcare costs for a client, enabling them to take definitive action to address this expenditure.”

The core services provided by MAXIS Global Wellness include:

  • Topic specific, educational Health & Wellness Toolkits designed to help global employers successfully implement a wellness campaign on education and awareness worldwide, effectively driving global-to-local health management strategies.
  • A business case modeler to calculate the impact on benefits spend and productivity resulting from changes in behaviours alongside access to exclusive country reports.
  • Our wellness technology marketplace of carefully selected third party suppliers of technology that deliver global wellness solutions and can be managed globally including:
    • Telemedicine services with a local network of doctors, operating with both international and local licences. This service can help avoid expensive specialist consultations and hospital. It will also have an impact on absenteeism and presenteeism with employees no longer having to wait for doctor appointments, or face delays in getting immediate appointments. With no out of pocket expenses or member share factors like deductible or co-payments associated with using the telemedicine services, employees will be able to save on their out of pocket expenses when consulting their physician.
    • Second medical opinion services to help reduce the spend on preventable surgeries and procedures, as well as providing specialised consultation services when local resources or specialists are lacking.
    • Mental health helpline offering counselling sessions with a mental health expert. Mental health is still seen as a stigma in many countries, so this aims to help those suffering with mental health issues. Addressing this taboo topic and effectively empowering employees to deal with situations that overwhelm them will have impact on several other diagnostic groupers that may not upfront seem to be related to mental health conditions.
    • Chronic disease management platform offering a 1:1 personalised coaching for the management of chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular diseases.  Providing a sustained and consistent approach to tackling chronic diseases.  This platform includes health risk assessments, personalised recommendations, virtual lifestyle management, coaching services and a chronic disease risk reduction service.
